Hi, it's my pleasure to read your messages on yor physical ideas. But I can't resist from telling you that your extremely patient and heuristic teaching of physics is nonsense to those prejudiced layman. Today's physics is the summit of a pyramid, which is built upon hundreds of years of contemplation, experimentation and a palace of splendid mathematics. Those who want to come to the top and see further have to move themselves up the pyramid step by step. It's impossible to achieve this by reading several introductory books, without writing down an integral sign on paper, and claim to understand. A normal person has to spent years of studying to fully understand those physics written in textbooks, and till this stage, it's not guaranteed that he can in the rest of his life grasp those frontier physics that is not so well written and summerized, and even make discoveries. You were talking group theory, gauge theory, string, differential geometry to these person who cannot even solve a high school physics problem, I don't think you have a chance to convey your ideas, even these are just normal person.
However, these person don't seem normal to me, they lack the basic scientific logic, language and attitude. Their intellegence is in the process of decaying at their ages. All they're willing to hear and that they can hear is they've saved human being from relativity. We have to acknowledge that some person can never understand relativity if they fail before age 30. There is some kind of an age barrier in physics, people are just not so smart when they're getting old. When I was in high school, I could do calculations much faster than my teachers. When I was in college, I had seen senior professors doing absurd research. Only a few people can escape from this age barrier. This is actually exemplified by the life of many physicists. Few of them did outstanding work after age 40. I'm afraid it's not just a waste of time to spend too much time arguing with these egocentric and stupid laymans, but a waste of your precious apex of intellegence. I believe you can do much better work in physics rather than pointing out their naive and even vicious misunderstandings again and again and again but without being understood. I used to hope that I could convert some of these people to science, let them see their mistakes, and teach them a little physics. But they only prooved that their first axiom is that 'everything I fail to understand is wrong.' So now I only think this BBS is a playground to sharpen one's expression, improve one's eloquence. It's fun to make them feel guilty and upset by only a few concise words, although they will recover by neglecting soon afterwards. But these people are never really going to touch a hair of physics, so let them be, and enjoy their absurdity. |
