一位美国科幻小说家看到我的一篇论文,问中子自旋能否改变时空? Dear Jian-Qi Shen, I am a science fiction writer living in the United States, along with my writing partner who I'm copying on this e-mail. I recently read part of yo ur paper dated May 26, 2003 entitled "Neutron-gravity interferometry experim ent: testing Earth's rotating frequency fluctuations via neutron Berry's pha ses due to spin-rotation couplings." I don't want to waste your time or even pretend I understand any of the equations you reference in your work, but I am curious and would appreciate any insights an expert like yourself might offer. In our next screenplay, the protagonist must unlock the secrets of gravi ty and create devices or 'plates' which create artificial gravity. We want his solution to be based on some type of scientific reality, in-line with th e very latest thoughts and findings on the subject. Our thoughts are that h e creates a device which through the manipulation of neutron spin of the mas s of the "plate", can create gravitational pull. Clearly, there is some link between neutron spin and gravity. Any thoug
hts you may have on the subject would be beneficial to us. Also, do you thi nk the link between the Earth's rotating frequency and TIME could be altered by neutron spin manipulation? I look forward to any reply you might have and wish you the best luck in your further studies and thoughts on the subject. Sincerely, Kenny Frey

Dear Kenny Frey, Thanks for your interest in my paper. I think that it is very essential to write fiction stories based on real sci entific mechanisms and principles (rather than on the purely illusory though ts). As far as the creation of artificial gravity is concerned, I think that you can be referred to Li Ning and Torr’ s work, where they investigated the in teraction between electromagnetic force and gravity in a superconductor. Spe cifically, by solving the London’s equations governing the superconducting electrons, they showed that the electromagnetic interaction (coexisting with the gravity) in a superconductor may induce a strong gravity (about 100 mil lions times stronger than that on the Earth), and vice versus. These works m ay be seen in: Phys. Rev. D, vol 43,No.2, pp.457(1991); Phys. Rev.B vol.64,n o.9,pp.5489(1992); Foundations of Physics Letters, vol.6, no.4, pp.371(1993) . Personally speaking, Li Ning and Torr’ s work is related close to the so-ca lled anti-Meissner effect (see, for example, my paper attached to this email ) and their mathematical procedure is correct. However, their result (i.e., inducing about 100 millions times stronger than that on the Earth) is not ve ry physically realistic. The reason for this is as follows: before they indu ce such a strong gravity, the applied superconductor has already been destro yed by the strong gravity. So, their induced stronger gravity cannot be esta blished in ordinary superconducting materials on the Earth. Maybe their resu lt holds true in the neutron star where the neutrons also possess the superc onducting properties. Another illustrative example of artificial gravity is the work of E.Podkletn ov (see in: Physica C, vol. 203,pp.441, 1992). E.Podkletnov’s experiment de monstrated that the rotating superconductor may shield the gravity (i.e., a 2% reduction in weight of the body near the rotating superconductor is creat ed). I think that this phenomenon is in connection with the gravitational Ba rnett effect. Although E.Podkletnov’s surprising experimental result could not be realized by other researchers so far, some theorists offered a theory as to why this effect might occur via quantum gravitational effects: specif ically, a local change to the cosmological constant (i.e., vacuum zero-point quantum fluctuation energy) in the superconductor and therefore the gravita tional properties of gravitating source (the rotating superconductor) alters much. Personally speaking, although this theoretical mechanism is based on real ph ysical principle, it won’t take place on the Earth since the density of mat ter on the Earth is too small to cut off the vacuum quantum fluctuation ener gy with high frequency and the local change to the vacuum quantum fluctuatio n energy is therefore not obvious. Only in the high-density matter such as t he neutron star can this effect occur, for the spinning magnetic moment of t he matter with high density in neutron star will cancel (repel) the high-fre quency vacuum quantum fluctuation energy. Thus the shielding effect of gravi ty in neutron star will be possible due to the considerable cancellation of vacuum quantum fluctuation. According to Einstein’s general relativity, the rotation of a body will res ult in the space-time curvature, and consequently lead to the neutron spin-g ravity coupling. On the other hand, the neutron spin will also affect the gr avity (i.e. the space-time curvature). But this influence on space-time curv ature is negligibly small on the Earth. Just similar to the above case (the local change to quantum fluctuation energy), only in the high-density matter will the particle spin (and the spinning magnetic moment) have considerable influence on the electromagnetic field and consequently on the gravitation. I think in your screenplay, in order to create the artificial gravity, the d evices or “plates” employed should be composed of high-density matter (suc h as neutron star matter). When you want to create a gravitational pull, you may make all the neutron spin polarized by means of strong magnetic fields (namely, due to the magnetic properties of spinning magnetic moment of neutr
ons, the vector of all neutron spin will be parallel to the same direction i n the presence of a strong magnetic field). Thus, the high-density neutron s pin (via its magnetic properties) will cancel (repel) a great majority of va cuum quantum fluctuation energy and accordingly the gravitational properties of “plates” will alter much. So, it is possible for the “plates” to cre ate a gravitational pull, just like that in the E.Podkletnov’s experiment ( ant-gravity or gravitational shielding) presented above. In a word, you can obtain opposite gravity pull (and the gravity pull in various directions) on ly by manipulating the directions of applied strong magnetic fields, which a cts upon the “plate” made of high-density matter (neutron star matter). I wish you success in your screenplay! regards! Jian qi Shen
